For the past couple of weeks my DDA class has been working with animation in 3DS MAX. This topic is the last one we’ll have this year, and I’m kind of glad it got to end with a bang. There was so much creative freedom given with the final assignment that I felt weird after completing the assignment. 3D animation has been a struggle with 3DS MAX. There are a lot of intricacies and functions and possibilities that it feels almost impossible to learn. Easing was probably my biggest challenge. There are so many small properties that keyframing with easing has that it can get irritating. Not much else was difficult, though. I had fun creating the animation and watching back what I had made. The unique main model I created is something that I am very proud of. Everything coming together in the end really has made animating in 3DS MAX one of my all time favorite units in this class.
Animation in 3D definitely has more depth than I have so far experienced. There are ways to make things smoother, cleaner, and overall more polished. I know that I am just scraping the surface, but I still feel like this short time we’ve had has still given me a lot of insight on how it works and what it’s like. I know that there are other ways to animate in 3D, and that I am probably going to have to learn them next year. For now, though, I am happy with my abilities and am excited for what is to come next year. In summary:

In video games, building personality for your character is super important, especially outside of the story. A character's Interaction with their environment, items, or characters can really help you understand how your protagonist thinks. Idle animations are a very special and memorable way to put the player in the character's head. Idle animations are the animations that a character performs after a period of inactivity from the player. Great examples of idle animations include Sonic appearing ticked off in Sonic The Hedgehog, Luigi falling asleep in Super Mario Galaxy, and a plethora of unique actions like jump roping and flexing (to name two) from Earthworm Jim are really good examples of building character for your character. |
