With DDA coming to a close, I just want to reflect on my experiences over this year so far. There have been a lot of units I have enjoyed, loathed, or felt indifferent to. I want this mainly to just be a positive reflection, though, so I’ll keep it to the good stuff. I have had a LOT of fun with working in photoshop, illustrator, and 3DS MAX. I’m really glad that these program were the meat of this class. The skills I have learned in this class for these programs is honestly more than I could have hoped for. I know that I struggled a lot with things in these programs; like animation in both Illustrate and 3DS MAX, blending in Photoshop, and the pen tool in Illustrator. These struggles ended up being more fun things to use at the end of it somehow (except stop motion animation in illustrator, that was awful). I can open any of these three programs and know that whatever I am about to do I am going to enjoy it. I was given a lot of creative liberties throughout the year, and I see that as a good thing. I got to experience a lot of difficulties on my own terms. I got to get my grades on my own terms. This has really pushed me to put more effort into my work, but also enjoy it. I have definitely loved this class pretty much everyday we’ve been in here. The things I have learned were enjoyable and helpful, and I am ready to learn more.

For the past couple of weeks my DDA class has been working with animation in 3DS MAX. This topic is the last one we’ll have this year, and I’m kind of glad it got to end with a bang. There was so much creative freedom given with the final assignment that I felt weird after completing the assignment. 3D animation has been a struggle with 3DS MAX. There are a lot of intricacies and functions and possibilities that it feels almost impossible to learn. Easing was probably my biggest challenge. There are so many small properties that keyframing with easing has that it can get irritating. Not much else was difficult, though. I had fun creating the animation and watching back what I had made. The unique main model I created is something that I am very proud of. Everything coming together in the end really has made animating in 3DS MAX one of my all time favorite units in this class.
Animation in 3D definitely has more depth than I have so far experienced. There are ways to make things smoother, cleaner, and overall more polished. I know that I am just scraping the surface, but I still feel like this short time we’ve had has still given me a lot of insight on how it works and what it’s like. I know that there are other ways to animate in 3D, and that I am probably going to have to learn them next year. For now, though, I am happy with my abilities and am excited for what is to come next year. In summary:
In my DDA class, I have been working with Subobjects,Primitives, and texturing 3D objects in 3DS MAX. Each of these things have had their each difficulties, but each was fun to work with. My thoughts haven't really changed on primitives. My class had been using them since the beginning of our 3D unit. They were both easy and fun to use. Subobjects were a little different. Subobjects started out really difficult to use. There were a lot of things that I did not understand that led to mistakes and troubles. Once I started to understand them, though, I started to find them more fun and helpful to use. Texturing has definitely stayed fun for me. From the second we started using it, I really enjoyed messing with all of the ways I could make an object look either really dumb or really good looking. I have kept this mindset from the beginning of using textures, but I know that I am not quite that good at using and working with yet, but I still fell like I understand it enough to say that I enjoy working with them. A textured model of the earth, moon, and a spaceship I had to make with texturing (all of the objects), primitives (base of the earth and moon), and subobjects (the spaceship). While primitives were relatively easy to use, subobjects and textures were and still are a lot harder to get used to and learn. Although I feel more comfortable with subobjects, they were challenging, with all of the different option you had to manipulate and change your shape. I still don't fully get texturing, with it's multitude of different shading types and ways to blend textures. All in all, I have grown to like 3DS MAX more, and am excited to learn and figure out everything I haven't yet.
